MANGO: IT’S HARVEST TIME

MANGO: IT’S HARVEST TIME

if you want to pick a mango at the right time, then you need to wait the required time for the fruit to develop after flowering. The season for harvesting mangoes in Sicily is usually the late summer, and depends on the location and the variety of the mango that is cultivated.

Generally, most mangoes are ready to be picked 100-150 days after from the flowering. The location and the climate will affect the flowering times of mango trees and, therefore, the harvest.

At Canalotto farm, a Sicilian Organic farm in the Trapani aerea, the mango harvest usually begin at the end of August, when the fruit is ripe, but still solid and firm, and has specific ripening characteristics.

For example, ripening mangoes progress in color from green to yellow with a reddish tint, but the external color is not the best way to tell if the mango is ripe. The color of the internal pulp is a better indicator. Completely ripe mangoes will display a yellow or orange flesh inside.

The harvest happens with care, by hand, cutting the stems of the fruit and being careful not to let the sap leak from the fruit stalk. To avoid this, the fruit is harvested with a long portion of stem, which will be shortened during the packaging stage.

The packaging process involves wrapping each individual fruit in specific packing nets, to effectively safeguard the mangoes during transit. Once they are individually protected, they are placed into boxes.

Canalotto farm has made the mango’s only secret its own: caring for it all yaer round with organic methods and letting the mango reach the perfect degree of ripeness on the tree! Only in this way is it possible to deliver a mango to customers at the peak of its organoleptic properties and flavor.”
